Metacognitive strategies
What is metacognition?
Homework
1. Read the text Metacognition, an Overview again.
2. Recheck the prezi presentation. According to the homework presented there, brainstorm possible ways to foster metacognition. Upload them in you blog and post a comment here with these ideas. Be prepared to discuss them next class.
3, In the same prezi presentation, 4 stages to develop critical thinking are presented. Study them carefully.
4. Research about automaticity and cognitive load. Answer the questions by Eric Dickens. Once again, post in your blog, comment in mine.
5. Study the two videos related to Bloom's taxonomy. Choose one of your lesson plans and analyse it according to the information presented in the videos. Be prepared to explain in front of the class.
Do All questions have to be answered? (Axel)
ReplyDeleteyes!
ReplyDeleteI get it, thanks...
ReplyDeleteMiss, My new blog is

From now on... Bye :)
Ok, Axel
ReplyDeleteMy 3 ideas on Metacognitions are 1. Read a text and develop activities and questions regarding this text 2. Do a research concentrating on the order and organizing the tasks for this research and 3.Write a paper organizing the ideas that you will lay down and planing a presentation with the most important facts on this paper.
ReplyDeleteIn the first point students should learn to monitor themselves while readind an article if they are understanding by making their own questions and getting the main idea. on the second point students should learn to organize their work ,I thought that an investigation is a good idea to learn to organize yourself to acomplish a task . and finally on the third point I wanted the class to organize their ideas when writing a paper and to summarize and present the most important factors to develop in a presentation and the "Powerpoint" presentation is a good exercise.
Awful staff your cri- cri... (you don't have to stole awful things)
ReplyDeleteMy ideas to promote metacognition are:
ReplyDelete- Tell students to pay more attention to X part of the class (explanations)
- Self-evaluation
- Interactive questioning
- At the beginning of the class, tell students what we want to them to achieve. At the end of the class, ask students if the acquired the goal.
- At home, read what we have studied today, again.
- Before go to sleep, check if you have all the necessary: dictionary, worksheets, etc.

In your own words, What is automaticity?
ReplyDeleteFor me, automaticity is when we learn something and we do it without be thinking in the process of it, just unconsciously.
How we develop automaticity?
We develop automaticity through learning, repetition and practice.
Ways to Foster Metacognition.
ReplyDelete1.-Activate Background Knowledge.
2.-Discuss Learning with Students.
3.-Have students identify their type of intelligence.
4.-Give students tools and have them construct their own learning (Scaffolding).
5.-Control and regulation of activities.
1) In your own words, what is "automaticity" and "cognitive load"?
Automaticity is the ability to do things uncosciously, it's usually related with repetition. For example, learning how to cook is an activity that over time becomes automatic and repetitive. When it reaches this stage it's when the learning was done.
Cognitive load is the excessive amount of content given to the students which results in the brain working harder to process all the information.

CLASS DISCUSSION
ReplyDelete1. Presenting a well-structured lesson plan (should help sts to find ways to concentrate)
2. Considering the affective domain in your planning (personality factors).
3. Sharing a simplified version of objectives, so sts can set their own goals and self-monitor the process.
4. Encouraging self-reflection with the use of learning logs.
5. Having a variety of teaching methods and activities (different learning styles).
Foster Metacognition:
ReplyDelete Evaluate Strengths and Weaknesses on Sts or Level of prior knowledge
to set a goal.
Apply the desired information from a variety of channels, practice
them using different skills and monitor their learning.
Self reflection and evaluation.
What is automaticity?
Learning by habit, experience, imitating a model as many times as possible.
What does "cognitive load" mean?
In my opinion it means an excessive load of information to execute an specific task, which means an error to become a meaningful task. The brain need to process all the information to get a better result.
How to foster metacognition?
ReplyDeleteStudents have to work for their own learning objectives.
Selfevaluation and selfcontrol of the activities.
Analyse prior knowledge
Analyse learning objectives, learning strategies, etc.
In your own words, what is "automaticity" and "cognitive load"?
Automaticity is practice, something that we can learn by experience, when we repeat and practice the activity. For example, daily activities like speak, walk, etc.
Cognitive load is the excessive quantity of information that the students receive. With this type of method, the brain work a lot and it is difficult to process all of the information for a better result.

How to foster metacognition?
ReplyDeleteTelling and teaching how they have to reflect on what they learn during a class
Explaining clearly what the goals are when they have to do a task.
Controlling their attention; they have to focus their attention on what they are doing.
Teaching them and show them how to do a self-assessment for knowing themselves and so, they can know when they have errors and then correct them.
Connecting new information to previous knowledge
In your own words, what is "automaticity" and "cognitive load"?
Automaticity: It is when you do something but you don’t use your mind, I mean you do it because you know how to do that but you don’t think step by step how to do it. You can get this by practice, repetition or learning. An example can be when you are driving, you do it so many time in your life that you don’t have to think have to do it when you know how to do that you just do it because you know how.
Cognitive load: it refers to working memory; this is a part of our memory that processes the information and controls everything that we do about learning. When working memory has to process too much information and it is called “overload” and the comprehension is really poor and learning is blocked.
Possible was to foster metacognition:
ReplyDeleteLearning how to learn.
Constructing connection between previous and new knowledge.
Promote learning environment.
Improve memory and attention with cognitive training games.
Promoting metacognition through negotiated assessment.
Engaging the students in activities that require reflection.
Group work and discussion time.
Identify what the students will be learning.
Explain them why it is meaningful or important what the students will be learning by giving relatives examples.
A brief description about what will be taught.
Help monitor progress, and then help students reflect on the assignment.
Explain them what they will have to achieve, the goals.
In your own words, what is “automaticity” and “cognitive load?”
Automaticity
Is the state which an individual perform common task without having to use a great effort or concentration. It is an spontaneous ability that we do every day, they are common activities, such as walking, speaking, riding and driving a car. It´ s an spontaneous reaction or stimulus which we don´t have to use a great effort to do it, you know have to do it because you get this by practice, repetition and learning.
Cognitive load:
This is the capacity of the brain to understand something, to perceive something, to problem solving, or juggling things in memory, where the total amount of the brain is imposed of working memory, and the volume of learning that is expected of the students in a particular unit of time.
Ideas to promote metacognition:
ReplyDeleteTell student what are the objectives of the class. (at the beggining)
Activate their prior knowledge, use interactive questions.
Tell student to pay attention to task’s explanations
Self questioning about what student have learnt in the class.
(Monitoring their learning)
Ask student if the objectives of the class have been met.
Self evaluation, to recognize their own performance, and what they need to improve it.
Automaticity and Cognitive load.
1. What is automaticity?
Automaticity is the ability to do something without thinking in the process needed or required to develop.
2. How do we develop automaticity?
We develop automaticity by learning, repetition and practice.
3. Create an example of how teachers can change the amount of “extraneous cognitive load” on an assignment?
Using visual split-attention, to process the information to get a meaningful learning.
Visual split attention integrate text and diagrams to reduce cognitive load and facilitate learning.(example in my blog)
4.When have you felt that you had a "full" cognitive load?
I have felt that I had a full cognitive load, when I have to learn too much concepts and their definition for a test, or when I have several test in the same day.
Possible ways to foster Metacognition.
ReplyDelete1.-Analize the prior knowledge of the students.
2.-Discuss Learning with Students.
3.-Conect the new information with the information that students know.
4.-Self regulation about the strengths and weaknesses of the students.
5.-Monitoring their proper learning.
2. What is automaticity?
Is the ability to do things without occupying the mind with the low-level details required, allowing it to become an automatic response pattern or habit. It is usually the result of learning, repetition, and practice.
3. What is Cognitive Load?
Is the capacity of the brain to understand something, also is the excessive information that the students receive.
4. Create an example of how teachers can change the amount of “extraneous cognitive load” on an assignment.
Maybe trying to use some power point presentation in a simple way with the minor information possible. Also use things like comparative tables or maybe with pictures.
5. When have you felt that you had a "full" cognitive load?
When I have to learn a lot of information like, dates, concepts, names of the most important people in a specific year.
Possible ways to foster Metacognition
ReplyDelete- Activate the previous knowledge of ours students, uniting the content
- Telling to our students what they are going to learn ( explaining the goals
- students must to participate, on that way we are generating critical thinking
- They must know , what they know and what don’t .
- They have to know their own strengths and weaknesses
What is automaticity ?
- Is when we have the ability to have an automatic response and we can develop this concept with repetition exercises and a lot of practice of our learning .
Cognitive load
- Is an excessive use of the memory , it happens when we push to the students to memorize to many things .
Create an example of how teachers can change the amount of “extraneous cognitive load” on an assignment.
- Using more didactic activities with attractive visuals ,maybe handmade or in a power point presentation, improving the students knowledge.
When have you felt that you had a "full" cognitive load?
- When I have to learn lots of concepts . I think that, when I have to do that I push my brain to memorize .
Possible ways to foster Metacognition:
ReplyDelete-Connect between prior knowledge with new content.
-Identify what the students will be learning.
-Explain what the goals of a class
-Interactive activities for meaningful learning
-If the students have questions, help them to clarify in the process
-Self - evaluation
-Ask students if the acquired the goals.
What is automaticity?
Automaticity is an automatic response; it is the ability to do things unconsciously. This is the result of a repetitive activity.
How do we develop automaticity?
We can develop automaticity with practices and repetitive activities, so we will be able to save in our brain.
Create an example of how teachers can change the amount of " extraneous cognitive load" on an assignment?
The teacher use prior knowledge to connect students with new content. Also the teacher guides the student with interactive resources, reducing stress and faciliting learning.
When have you felt that you had a "full" cognitive load?
I have felt that I had a full cognitive load, when I have to read a long text and do not undertand everythng, when I have to study for many tests in a short time, also when I do not understand new contents and the teacher does not explain.
METACOGNITION
ReplyDelete2) Possible ways to foster metacognition
Making a plan for learning something.
Monitoring/Checking your own understanding
Time management.
Evaluating progress in completing a task
Maintaining motivation
Focusing attention
Selecting the right strategies for a learning task
Organize your thoughts.
Complementary ideas.
There is a set of rules and effective strategies an individual can use in learning about domain-specific subject, such as reading, writing, mathematics. These strategies may include error detecting, effort and attention allocating, elaborating, self-questioning, self-explanation, constructing visual representations, activating prior knowledge, rereading difficult text sections, and going back to revise.
• Model strategies using the think-aloud method.
• Guide students in using strategies in the classroom.
• Encourage children to apply strategies in order to develop their own learning.
4) Research about automaticity and cognitive load.
ReplyDeleteIn your own words, what is automaticity?
Is the ability to do something without thinking about it. For example are common activities such as walking, speaking, driving a car.
How do we develop automaticity?
When an activity is sufficiently, learned, practiced and repeated we develop automaticity. We can focus the mind on other activities or thoughts, for example holding a conversation or planning a speech while driving a car.
What is cognitive load?
Cognitive load refers to the informational load that is being processed in working memory. When cognitive load is increased beyond our working memory capacity, learning is depressed (blocked).
Create an example of how teachers can change the amount of “extraneous cognitive load” on an assignment?
When the teacher explains the contents and then he/she gives to the students the instructions for making a portfolio with different activities related with what students had learned in class.
When have you felt that you had a “full” cognitive load?
I had a full cognitive load when I had to study different subjects for giving three tests in the same day. I was almost collapsed.

ReplyDeleteHow to promote metacognition
ReplyDeleteYou as a teacher have to explain all the objectives of your class at the beginning.
You as a teacher have to active their background knowledge.
You as a teacher have to tell students to pay attention to task’s explanations.
You as a teacher have to provide students a moment in order to attach self questioning related to what student have learnt in the class.
The teacher has to ask students if the objectives of the class have been met.
You use self evaluation in order to recognize their own performance, and what they need to improve it.
Automaticity and Cognitive load.
1. What is automaticity?
Automaticity is the ability to do something without thinking in the process needed or required to develop. you do it unconciously
2. How do we develop automaticity?
We develop automaticity by learning, repetition and practice.
3. Create an example of how teachers can change the amount of “extraneous cognitive load” on an assignment? Be clear in what you are teaching, try to avoid this extraneous cognitive load as you are the teacher try to use one way to teach something I mean if you are going to teach shapes try to use the visual element, make children able to touch things and provide them with a clear definition of what is a circle, a triangle, etc..
4. When have you felt that you had a "full" cognitive load? I think that in my personal view I have lots of things to do in my daily routine. Too much to read, too much to learn and being a single mother, a worker and a student it's very difficult. Sometimes I feel quite "full of cognitive load" every day. When I couldn't understand something or when I couldn't reach the objectives.
How foster metacognition?
ReplyDelete- Activating the previous knowledge in the students.- With a self-evaluation.
-Develop in students reflect on what, how, when and where to use metacognitive strategies.
-Questions about the knowledge (what I know about it?)
-Questions about the process (what skills I have developed?)
Automaticity and Cognitive load.
* In your own words, what is "Automaticity?
Is the ability to do things without occupying the mind with the low-level details required, allowing it to become an automatic response pattern or habit. It is usually the result of learning, repetition, and practice.
The easiest way to understand automaticity is to think of everyday activities that are often performed at the same time. For example, a teenager who is able to listen to music while also completing a homework.
* How do we develop automaticity?
The automaticity is the result of learning and we can developed by repetition and practice to make work our brain. The development of automaticity of skills generally reduces the load of the working memory by 90%.
* Create an example of how teacher can change the amount of "extraneous cognitive load" on an assesment.
The Teacher can create an didactic activity in where the students practice their previous knowledge and begins with new knowledge in progressive way. The students can learn in a didactic form without presure in where the teacher evaluate other things instead of cognitive knowladge.
* When have you felt that you had a "full" cognitive load?
When I have to read too much and memorize terms, when I have to different meanings of phrasal verbs to my english class.

According with physiologists, Metacognition refers to our learning processes, thinking about thinking. It means, how someone learn to process information to achieve a new knowledge. Metacogniton enable us to be successful learners, and that we want foster to students.
ReplyDeleteHow can we foster metacognition?
1. Activate background knowledge
2. Identify the students`s type of intelligence
3. Give tools to build their own knowledge
4. Control and regulation activities
5. Tell them to reflec on their learnling
6. Show them how to self-assesment
Automatically is the learning process that occurs unconsciously. We perform things every day without thinking how and why we do it.
And the other hand, we have the cognitive load. Cognitive load is the excessive amount of content given to the students which results in the brain working harder to process all the information
What is automaticity?
ReplyDeleteAutomaticity is when you do something automatically, without thinking, after learning something, you repeat it many times until you are able to do it without thinking how to do it. Examples: Speaking a language, walking, driving a car, etc.
What is Cognitive load?
It refers to working memory, when the memory has to process too much information in a short period of time, the comprehension is really poor and the learning is blocked and that is called “overload”.
How to foster metacognition?
-Settle the objectives of the class.
-Let the students know what the goals for the class are.
-Activate the previous knowledge and connect them with the new content.
-Help the students to acquire the input in a pleasant atmosphere.
-Monitoring the input by evaluating them and helping them how to approach to a given task.
-Evaluating the students by quizzing them and check their weaknesses to reinforce their understanding in order to achieve the goals.
-Self evaluation.
-Ask the students what they have acquired with the given task.
-Ask the students to give a brief summary of what they have acquired after the class.
-Introduce the new content for the next lesson and relate it with the previous one.
How do we develop automaticity?
ReplyDeleteIt is the result of learning and we can develop it by practicing and repeting the activity constantly, so in that way we can save the information learned in our brain.
How to foster Metacognition?
ReplyDelete- Teacher should activate the student's previous knowledge
- Explain objectives at the beginning of the class or activity to develop.
- Students should create a list of thinks or content that would be difficult for them to develop.
- Self evaluation
- Ask the students what they would learn with the activity given.
- Monitoring from the Teacher
- Feedback
- Time management
- Motivate students
Automaticity:
- Acts or activities that a person does without thinking, are habits, for example; blink or speak.
- Bases on the mechanical activities that automaticity imply, the teacher would improve a method related to this. The communicative language could it be chosen.
How to foster Metacognition?
ReplyDelete-Explain the objectives at the beginning of the class.
-Every class, the teacher have to reinforce previous knowledge in the students. This process can be done in different ways, for example: just asking to the students, a short exercise or through a video about the last class.
-Every single activity should be reflective, because in this way, students will internalize the new knowledge and associate with the previous knowledge.
-Also, at the end of every activity, students have to do a self-evaluation about their development in the activity.
-At the end of the class, the teacher have to do a feedback to the students. Through this, the students will know their strengths and weaknesses, and at the same time, having the opportunity to improve their skills.
Automaticity:
-Is the ability to do things without thinking. It is usually the result of the repetition, learning a practice. An example of automaticity is walk or speak.
Strategies for Developing Metacognitive Behaviors
ReplyDelete-Identifying "what you know" and "what you don't know."
-Talking about thinking.
-Keeping a thinking journal.
-Planning and self-regulation.
-Debriefing the thinking process.
-Self-Evaluation.
Automaticity is the state of being able to complete tasks without conscious thought. Fluency is the result of automaticity; to be able to recognize and comprehend written words reflexively, without having to decode or pause to consider their definition.
ReplyDeleteHow to foster Metacognition?
ReplyDelete- The teacher have to active prior knowledge, so the student can remember what they saw before and what they don´t remember.
- Also is important to let theM know the objective of the class and of each activity.
- When they learn something, ask them to tell you (as a teacher) what they learn. They have to xplain with their own words.
-After each activity, let them make a reflection of what they do.
-Also have self evaluation, to see if they achieve o not the goal.
What is Automaticity?
Automaticity is the ability to develop actions or do something without any mental effort.
How to foster Metacognition?
ReplyDeletePlanning
Tell to the students what is kind of task that will do in the class
Explain the objectives about the task
Explain bout the resources that wil be used
Tell the time that take it
What to want to learn with this task
Monitoring
If they understood the objectives
Control about own work
What is learned
Self - evaluation
What is automaticity?
Is the ability shown by an individual to perform common task without needing to use a great deal of the conentration or effort.
